Traditional Midwifery
Why Traditional Midwifery?
Traditional Midwifery as a sign of sovereignty.
Traditional Midwifery as a sign of reclamation.
Traditional Midwifery as a sign of community strength.
Many choose traditional midwifery over licensed midwifery because it offers a wholistic, culturally rooted, and deeply personal approach to birth. Traditional midwives view birth as both a physical and sacred event; weaving in ceremony, herbal medicine, bodywork, and emotional care alongside skilled support. While licensed midwifery operates within state regulations and standardized protocols, traditional midwifery allows for more full body autonomy and honors family choice, including options that fall outside of licensed practice. Traditional midwives are highly trained and skilled in many aspects of birth, including recognizing & responding to emergencies. Our training is grounded in knowledge passed down through lineage, community and lived experience, as well as through formal schooling and continued study. For many families, this path offers a relationship built on trust, continuity and cultural tradition, alongside strong clinical skill and safety.
For many Indigenous and BIPOC people, licensure can be harmful because it imposes outside control over practices that have been carried within our cultures for generations. Licensing systems are created by state and medical institutions not by our communities, and they often restrict or outlaw the very ceremonies, medicines and ways of caring that are central to Indigenous Traditional midwifery. This can lead to erasure of culture, loss of autonomy and the silencing of traditional knowledge.
Many families and midwives choose traditional midwifery because it allows us to practice in alignment with our values, teachings and ancestral ways without needing permission from systems that historically have oppressed and marginalized BIPOC communities.
Traditional midwifery is not a lack of training… on the contrary, it carries deep skill in attending birth, including emergencies. Rooted in lineage, mentorship, community wisdom, and ongoing study. Choosing traditional midwifery is an act of sovereignty: it protects cultural continuity, honors the sacredness of birth and ensures that our practices are passed forward to future generations.
Why choose homebirth?
The Power of Familiar Surroundings
Birthing at home surrounds you with your own space, people, and rhythms. This sense of safety helps families feel calmer, comfortable and safe which can make labor more easeful and smooth.
Individualized Support
You receive one-on-one, individualized support tailored to your needs and wishes. I take sweet time to build trust and a relationship with you and your family, so you feel respected, heard/seen and supported throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
Continuity of Care
I walk with you every step of the way from the moment you reach out, to the end of your postpartum experience. This continuity strengthens safety, emotional support, and overall well-being. Lets face it, by the time our “care” is “finished”, we are family.
Fewer Interventions, More Trust in Birth
Home birth has been proven to have lower rates of medical interventions such as cesarean sections, inductions, and epidurals, tears and trauma. I promote a natural and physiological approach to childbirth while being prepared to handle any unforeseen circumstances.
Birth as Ceremony
Home birth allows loved ones to be actively involved. Partners can be hands-on, siblings/family may be present. The atmosphere is contained by love and support. Birth becomes a shared meaningful experience in the heart of your home.
A Traditional Midwife weaves spirit, tradition, and the wisdom of generations into the sacred passage of birth. She honors body sovereignty, knows birth as ceremony, and carries knowledge both old and new.
