Placenta encapsulation/processing is far from a modern trend. Its rooted in ancient traditions. For centuries, cultures around the world have honored the placenta as a source of strength, healing, and protection. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it has been used for over a thousand years to restore energy and support recovery. Indigenous cultures around the globe treat the placenta as sacred and a symbol of vitality.

Placenta Processing

Benefits of Placenta Processing

Placenta encapsulation is a long practiced way to support your body, mind and spirit after birth. Across cultures, the placenta has been known as a powerful source of nourishment and healing.

The one that continues to care for you even after your baby arrives.

Many families choose encapsulation/processing because it may help to:

  • Rebuild strength and vitality by replenishing iron and essential nutrients lost during pregnancy & birth, helping to ease fatigue and restore energy.

  • Nurture emotional well-being by supporting mood balance and softening feelings of overwhelm in the early postpartum days. Helps prevent Post-Partum Mood Disorders.

  • Support lactation by encouraging a healthy milk supply. The placenta contains hormones such as oxytocin and prolactin, both of which play key roles in milk production and let-down.

  • Restore hormonal & nutrient balance as the placenta carries Gammaglobulin, Iron, Interferon, Oxytocin, Prolactin, Progesterone and other supportive hormones that nurture hormonal balance and well-being.

  • Encourage healing by supporting uterine healing and helping to minimize postpartum bleeding.

  • Strengthen the body’s immune system with nourishing peptides and micronutrients that help promote overall immunity.

  • Invite grounding and closure transforming the placenta into a meaningful ritual of nourishment, reflection, and self-care.

Traditional Placenta Encapsulation

Encapsulation preparation begins with carefully cleaning the placenta, gently steaming it with dried ginger, dong quai and myrrh. Then dehydrating it before pulverization and encapsulation. This traditional method is believed to enhance the placenta’s healing and tonifying properties, supporting uterine warmth, balance, and overall postpartum recovery.

Rooted in the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this method involves intentionally rinsing, steaming, and dehydrating the placenta before placing it into capsules. The introduction of heat through steaming is considered essential in TCM for healing after childbirth, while also ensuring that any bacteria are killed. During steaming, lemon, ginger, and hot pepper are added to the water to bring balance and detoxifying properties for the mother.

Raw Placenta Encapsulation

Some women worry that steaming may reduce the nutrients in the placenta, similar to the difference between eating a vegetable raw versus steamed. With the raw preparation, the placenta is carefully rinsed but not steamed before being thinly sliced and dehydrated over a period of time. Many mothers also note that the raw method provides a stronger, more immediate release of hormones upon consumption. However, this approach can be too strong for some women, particularly those with anxiety around their menstrual cycle or pregnancy.

For safety reasons, if the baby has meconium during labor, the raw method must be switched to the traditional steamed route.

Raw Placenta Smoothie Cubes

If swallowing capsules isn’t for you, placenta cubes are gentle alternative. The placenta is thoroughly cleaned, then put into molds and frozen into convenient cubes. Each day one cube is blended into a fruit smoothie. You won’t taste the placenta at all. These cubes are made from the raw placenta, meaning they are not steamed or dehydrated like the encapsulation process. Many moms who have a desire to increase breast milk and energy immediately postpartum, or who have experienced postpartum hemorrhaging or have a history of it will often select the raw method. You can choose to have your entire placenta prepared as cubes, or enjoy cubes for the first week and have the remainder encapsulated for continued support.
